The Bahamas is an Atlantic archipelago nation off the east coast of Florida, composed of around 3,000 islands and cays, with about 30 populated. • Junkanoo, the largest Bahamian event, is a street carnival held on Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year's Day (January 1).
• The event features groups 'rushing' through towns, especially Nassau, wearing elaborate, disposable crepe paper costumes.
• The music is a blend of African rhythms, loud brass, and cowbells.
• Costumes are refreshed annually and are sometimes discarded in the streets.
• While generally good-natured, Bahamians do not tolerate foolish behavior.
