📣 Traveler notes
The Republic of Bulgaria is located in the Balkan region of Europe, positioned west of the Black Sea and south of the Danube River.
- Major holidays include Christmas, New Year's Day, Easter, and three other national holidays.
- Important national holidays include March 3 (Liberation Day), May 1 (Workers' Day), and May 6 (St. George's Day/Armed Forces Day).
- Use polite greetings such as "dobar den" (good day). While locals are often conversational, avoid attempting casual 'small talk' in commercial settings. Note that Bulgaria was the first language to adopt the Cyrillic alphabet, which is a source of national pride. Also, be aware that the meaning of head gestures is reversed: nodding typically means 'no,' and shaking the head means 'yes.'
About this holiday
While originally commemorating the Bulgarian Alphabet, Enlightenment, and Culture (observed on May 24th since 1851), the holiday is officially named to recognize St. Cyril and St. Methodius, focusing on their contributions to the Bulgarian alphabet, education, culture, and Slavonic literature.
