Romania is characterized by rich cultural and natural diversity, encompassing scenic mountain landscapes, unspoiled rural areas, and historic cities. Since joining the European Union in 2007, the country has developed significantly and is home to one natural and six cultural UNESCO world heritage sites.

• Greet people using 'Bună ziua' (Good day/afternoon).
• When offered something, politeness may require insisting on accepting the offer, even if declining.
• Be aware that Romania's history and culture are distinct from the surrounding Balkan region.
• Avoid criticizing the country’s relationship with the Soviet Union or discussing ethnic tensions.
• Do not confuse Romanian and Roma people; this is considered offensive.
• Expect hosts to be notably hospitable, particularly in rural areas.
• When greeting people, handshakes are customary. Kissing both cheeks is standard practice upon arrival or departure. When visiting a home, remove your shoes. Politeness dictates offering seats to the elderly or pregnant, allowing women to pass first through doorways, and assisting with luggage.
