📣 Traveler notes

Located on the eastern half of Hispaniola with Haiti, the Dominican Republic is noted for its white sand beaches, mountain landscapes, and Santo Domingo, the oldest European city in the Americas. Its Hispanic heritage leads it to be called the 'Cradle of the Americas.'

  • A general atmosphere of warmth and hospitality.
  • Spanish language skills will greatly enhance the travel experience.
  • Due to its colonial past, social and economic class divisions may be noticeable.
  • Tips are expected in service industries.
  • Interactions involving the history with Haiti should be handled with care and sensitivity.
  • Using Spanish phrases is appreciated and shows respect for local culture. Tipping staff in resorts and services is advisable, as the country is economically developing. Avoid discussing race or colorism, as social caste perceptions and historical bias persist. Be sensitive regarding complex historical relations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

About this holiday

The Dominican Republic's independence from Haiti began on February 27, 1844, and concluded on January 24, 1856. Prior to this, the island of Hispaniola was united, and the region, previously the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo, was unified with the Republic of Haiti in 1822.
