Colombia is in the northwest corner of South America. It is characterized by diverse ethnic groups, varied geography (including Caribbean and Pacific coasts, mountains, and Amazon jungle), and spans an area twice the size of France.

• Approach discussions of historical violence with sensitivity.
• Attitudes toward homosexuality are generally comparable to those in the United States.
• While Catholicism is predominant, younger generations show increased religious tolerance.
• Social life centers on dancing and celebrations.
• When addressed, it is appropriate to use '¿Señor?' or '¿Señora?'.
• Address people respectfully using '¿Señor?' or '¿Señora?'. Use 'Por favor' (please) and 'muchas gracias' (thank you). Avoid pointing with fingers; use the chin or lips instead. Note that dancing is a social activity, not necessarily an act of flirtation.
