The Dormition of the Mother of God is a major feast for Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. It commemorates the 'falling asleep' and assumption of Mary into heaven. While observed on August 15 (or August 28 on the Julian calendar), it is known as the Assumption of Mary in Western churches.
