Lithuania is a low-lying, primarily agricultural Baltic state located in northeast Europe. Bordered by Latvia, Belarus, Poland, the Kaliningrad exclave of Russia, and the Baltic Sea, it achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1990.

• Independence Day (February 16th): Marks the end of the Russian Empire's rule in 1918.
• Restitution of Independence (March 11th): Commemorates the restoration of independence from the Soviet Union.
• St John's Day (June 24th): Observed as a midsummer's celebration with pagan elements.
• Statehood Day (July 6th): Honors the 1253 coronation of Mindaugas as King of Lithuania.
• Christmas (December 25th): A major national holiday.
• While the capital, Vilnius, is cosmopolitan, Lithuanian society can be generally conservative. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion, and national pride is highly valued.
