📣 Conseils aux voyageurs
Brazil, the fifth largest country globally, is renowned for its vast cultural and natural diversity. Attractions range from the energetic celebrations of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival to the Amazon rainforest and Iguazu Falls. Brazilian culture is an international mix, incorporating influences from European colonizers, African, Asian, and indigenous communities. Prepare for a blend of bustling urban life, relaxed beaches, and deep-rooted traditional lifestyles.
- Observe local customs for greetings: women and men often exchange cheek kisses (number varies by city/region); men typically shake hands.
- Be aware that public displays of affection are generally accepted, but cultural sensitivities regarding gender and sexuality exist.
- Religious intolerance is illegal and penalized by law. Showing respect for sacred sites is required.
- Meal times are usually cheerful and noisy; when finished eating, place cutlery parallel on the plate.
- Do not assume that a relaxed attitude toward time applies to all structured activities (e.g., concerts or flights).
- Plan for social interactions to be physically close and touch-friendly, as this is common and not necessarily flirtatious.
- Social interactions are generally warm and conversational. Be prepared for public initiation of conversations, as this is a common way Brazilians connect. Although passionate, communication should remain diplomatic. Regarding punctuality, appointments are generally flexible, with a 10–15 minute late arrival considered normal (except for business meetings). While local transport (subways, buses) can be unpredictable, airport and long-distance bus departures are typically punctual. Culture is highly sensitive: avoid comments on racism, politics, or the military regime (1964-1985). Personal questions (religion, income) should be reserved for close acquaintances.
