Bulgaria is a country in the Balkan region of Europe, situated west of the Black Sea and south of the Danube River.

• Major national holidays include March 3 (Liberation Day), May 1 (Labor Day), May 6 (St. George's Day/Day of the Bulgarian Armed Forces), and May 24 (Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and the Cyrillic Alphabet).
• Several national holidays are recognized by the state, in addition to Christmas, New Year's Day, and Easter.
• Dress conservatively. Bulgarians are generally friendly. Common greetings include 'dobar den' (good day) or 'kak ste' (how's it going). Note that in Bulgaria, nodding means 'no,' and shaking the head means 'yes.' Be cautious when discussing national history or Macedonia, especially with nationalists. Be mindful of potential prejudices regarding Turkish people or Muslims.
