📣 Conseils aux voyageurs
Serbia is a diverse Balkan nation known for its rich history, varied landscapes ranging from plains to mountains, and hospitable people. It offers a mix of cultural experiences, including vibrant urban life in Belgrade, popular ski resorts like Kopaonik, and numerous spa destinations.
- State holidays include New Year's Day (Jan 1), Orthodox Christmas (Jan 7), and Statehood Day (Feb 15).
- Most retail stores remain open on holidays except for Jan 1 and Jan 7.
- Regional variations exist; some shops in the north may close on Dec 25.
- Public holidays include Labor Day (May 1), Victory Day (May 9), and Vidovdan (June 28).
- Armistice Day is observed on November 11.
- Official celebrations for Statehood Day last two days.
- Serbs are generally very hospitable; bring a small gift if invited into a home and remove shoes in rural settings. Avoid sensitive political topics regarding the 1990s wars or Kosovo's independence. Use 'molim' for polite conversation, use formal address ('Vi') for elders, and avoid pointing with your finger. When toasting, maintain eye contact; be mindful that rakija is high-alcohol. Note that while the state is secular, the Orthodox Church remains culturally influential.
