📣 Conseils aux voyageurs
Spain is known for its relaxed pace of life, diverse cuisine, and rich culture. The country has a deep history, reflected in numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Spaniards are generally welcoming, but communication may involve interruptions, loud speaking, and unsolicited advice. Visitors are advised to respect local traditions, religious festivals, and historical sensitivities.
- New Year's Eve (Nochevieja) traditions include eating grapes, symbolizing one grape for each of the twelve chimes at midnight.
- The New Year's celebration is initiated and broadcast from La Puerta del Sol in Madrid by 12 chimes ('Las Campanadas').
- The new year celebration concludes with a fireworks display after the twelve chimes.
- Greet others by kissing them on both cheeks (exceptions apply for men). While being punctual for initial meetings is appreciated, time is generally viewed more relaxed than in Northern Europe. At mealtimes, wait for others to be seated and the last person to finish before departing. Avoid comments regarding the former colonial past, the 'Black Legend,' or the Spanish Civil War, and remain neutral regarding regional political issues.
