📣 Traveler notes
Gibraltar (known as 'The Rock' or 'Gib') is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom located at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Spain to the north and is situated near Morocco to the south. As of 2020, the population was 34,000.
- Gibraltarians are proud of their identity and have overwhelmingly voted to remain British.
- While there are historical political sensitivities, there is no general animosity from Gibraltarians towards Spanish individuals.
- The relationship with Spain has improved significantly following the 2006 Cordoba Agreement.
- Use 'Gibraltarian' or 'Llanito' when referring to local people, as they prefer this over being called Spanish. Be mindful that the term 'colony' can be sensitive due to its historical connotations regarding self-governance.
About this holiday
Gibraltar recognizes both 'bank holidays' (days when banks and businesses close) and 'public holidays' (days observed through custom and practice). While these terms are often used interchangeably, a legal distinction exists.
