📣 Traveler notes
The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, positioned between Cumbria (England) and County Down (Northern Ireland). It maintains its own government through the elected parliament, Tynwald, and is not part of the United Kingdom. The population was 84,000 in 2021.
- Be aware of the island's distinct cultural identity and local terminology.
- Understand that the governance system operates independently from the UK.
- Be prepared for large crowds, especially during the major annual TT races.
- Use appropriate local terminology when referring to people and culture.
- Local residents are referred to as 'Manx,' rather than 'British' or 'English.' The island is generally considered socially conservative.
About this holiday
The annual TT (Tourist Trophy) races are a two-week motorcycle racing event held on the Isle of Man, traditionally in May or June. Since its inception in 1907, the event is sanctioned by the Auto-Cycle Union and promoted by the Manx government.
