Japan blends ancient tradition with modern life. Travelers should plan carefully during periods of high celebration, such as Golden Week (April 29–May 5), due to anticipated massive crowds and increased costs.

• Golden Week (April 29–May 5) is a long public holiday period, causing massive travel congestion and higher prices.
• New Year (Oshōgatsu) is the most significant holiday, typically closing the country from late December to early January.
• Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) is a popular spring festival, often resulting in crowded tourist areas.
• Summer is characterized by local festivals (matsuri) and fireworks displays (hanabi).
• Travel plans should account for Japan's rhythm, which is frequently dictated by public holidays and festivals.
• Tipping is generally not practiced in Japan.
• When eating, use chopsticks (hashi) properly; do not stick them upright in rice or pass food from one pair to another. For service, say "sumimasen" to gain staff attention. Tipping is not customary.
