• New Year (Oshōgatsu) is the most important holiday, typically shutting down the country from December 30th to January 3rd.
• Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) occurs in March or April, drawing large crowds, especially in spots like Kyoto.
• Golden Week (April 29 - May 5) is a period of four consecutive public holidays, leading to heavy crowds and inflated prices for travel.
• Summer includes numerous local festivals (matsuri) and fireworks (hanabi), such as Tanabata on July 7th.
• The Awa Odori is a well-known Obon Festival held in Tokushima.
• Nihon (日本) is the Japanese name for Japan, an island nation in East Asia.
• When dining, use chopsticks (箸). Do not stick chopsticks upright in rice, pass food from your chopsticks to another person's, or point with them. It is normal to drink soups/broths directly from the bowl and to use a spoon for main-dish soups, curry, or fried rice. Staff typically ignore you until prompted; use "sumimasen" (excuse me). Do not leave payment on the table; pay at the counter. Tipping is not customary.
