📣 Traveler notes
Latvia is a Baltic state, famous for Riga's World Heritage Old Town. Other attractions include the 500-km sea coast, extensive nature parks, and diverse cities such as Liepāja (known for Karosta), Kuldīga (featuring Europe's widest waterfall), and Cēsis (with medieval castle ruins).
- Event schedules and tickets are often available at bilesuparadize.lv.
- New Year's Eve (December 31 – January 1) is often celebrated by family, but public events are also common.
- Traditional town center events, such as egg fights, occur annually during Easter (Lieldienas) in April.
- The Summer Solstice features traditional celebrations in various locations, particularly in Sigulda.
- Latvians are generally reserved and value personal space; avoid initiating greetings with strangers. Until you know someone better, refrain from discussing personal topics like salary, politics, or religion. Littering is illegal and subject to fines. Holding doors or allowing others to board first is considered polite.
About this holiday
This day off was established in 2025 following the 4 Nations Face-Off ice hockey tournament, which replaced the NHL's annual All-Star Game. The tournament featured only NHL players representing Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States.
