📣 Traveler notes
Nicaragua is Central America’s largest and least populated country, known for its natural beauty, particularly its volcanoes and lakes. Key natural attractions include Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca), Central America’s largest freshwater body, and volcanoes such as Concepción (on Ometepe), Momotombo, and Mombacho.
- Use formal Spanish greetings with strangers.
- Dress modestly, especially long pants for men.
- Avoid ridiculing or aggressively discussing religion.
- Be aware that locals may give informal nicknames.
- Expect conversation about personal appearance or weight.
- Use formal Spanish address forms ("usted"/"ustedes") with strangers, and consider using titles like "Don" (men) or "Doña" (women) for politeness. Dress modestly; men should wear long pants due to mosquito risk. While compliments are common, avoid ridiculing or aggressively proselytizing about religion. Be prepared for locals to give non-offensive nicknames regarding appearance or weight.
About this holiday
The Battle of San Jacinto took place on September 14, 1856, in Hacienda San Jacinto, Managua. It involved a confrontation between the Legitimist Septentrion Army (led by Colonel José Dolores Estrada, with 160 soldiers) and William Walker's Nicaraguan filibusters (led by Lieutenant Colonel Byron Cole, with 300 men). The combat lasted four hours, concluding in the defeat of the filibusters.
