📣 Traveler notes

North Macedonia is an ethnically diverse, landlocked country in the Balkans, featuring a mix of Ottoman, Yugoslav, and modern architecture. It is generally considered an off-the-beaten-path destination with developing and sometimes challenging tourist infrastructure.

  • Taksirat Festival: A major winter festival in Skopje, typically held in late November or early December.
  • Baba Marta: A tradition linked to March 1st, recognized by UNESCO, involving the exchange of decorative adornments called 'martinka.'
  • D Festival: An annual multi-day outdoor music festival held in Dojran.
  • When referring to the country, use 'Macedonia' instead of 'North Macedonia' to avoid potential offense. Due to regional sensitivities, travelers should avoid initiating conversations regarding the 2001 war, the Balkan wars, or the pending EU membership. Remaining neutral on topics concerning neighboring countries is advisable.

About this holiday

Republic Day (Ilinden) is observed on August 2nd. It commemorates the Ilinden Uprising of 1903 against the Ottoman Empire, which led to the proclamation of the Kruševo Republic, and the First Session of ASNOM in 1944 during the National Liberation Struggle, which laid the foundation for SR Macedonia.
