📣 Traveler notes
Peru is a diverse South American country, known for sites like Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines. Its scenery spans Amazon jungles, coastal deserts, and Andean peaks, offering rich biodiversity and a culture combining indigenous, mestizo, and criollo influences.
- Respect local cultural customs, especially regarding indigenous populations and religious traditions.
- Be aware of potential social and political tensions in different regions of Peru.
- View coca leaf chewing as a cultural ritual rather than solely a drug use, and keep imported/derived products out of the country.
- Expect cultural encounters marked by a diverse mix of ethnic groups and traditions.
- Exercise caution around public demonstrations or strikes.
- Dress respectfully when visiting historical or religious sites.
- When referring to indigenous people, use 'el indígena' or 'la indígena,' as 'indio' is considered offensive. Coca leaf chewing is a common, legal cultural practice (tea is also available). Respect the blend of Catholicism and pre-Hispanic religions, particularly at religious sites. Due to potential social/political tensions between Andean/rural and urban populations, avoid sensitive discussions or demonstrations.
