While English is widely spoken, locals appreciate efforts to learn Tagalog or other regional languages. In dining settings, avoid using your left hand for eating or handling items, as it is traditionally considered unclean. Tipping is not standard in restaurants as a service charge is usually included. When visiting homes, remove your shoes unless told otherwise. Be mindful of local sensitivities regarding politics and religion; while the country is generally LGBT-tolerant, public displays of affection are often viewed as conservative.
