📣 Traveler notes

Portugal is an acclaimed international destination known for its beautiful beaches, warm summers, rich history, and gastronomy. Popular activities include visiting historical sites, enjoying natural attractions like the surf waves at Nazaré, and attending religious pilgrimages in Fátima. The country also offers skiing in the Serra da Estrela region during the winter.

  • Seasonal festivals and fairs are common throughout the country, especially in the autumn and northern regions.
  • Summer features various music and cultural festivals, including the popular 'Marchas Populares' in Lisbon and Porto.
  • Traditional and religious parish festivals mark special occasions, often involving processions, fireworks, and traditional clothing.
  • Specialized fairs, such as the annual horse trading fair in Golegã, showcase local crafts, food, and culture.
  • Major events and festival schedules are generally listed on the official tourist board websites.
  • When visiting churches or religious monuments, guests should dress appropriately and remain silent. While Portugal is generally secular, the country's constitution guarantees separation of church and state. Be mindful that in remote or traditional areas, overly open behavior may be frowned upon. Smoking is restricted in many indoor public areas, and fines can be issued for violations. Public displays of affection, particularly among gay couples, are well-accepted in major cities but may be viewed differently in rural areas.

About this holiday

The Portuguese capture of Goa occurred in 1510, when Governor Afonso de Albuquerque took the city from the Sultanate of Bijapur. Old Goa became the capital of Portuguese India, which encompassed areas including Fort Manuel of Cochin, Bom Bahia, Damaon, and Chaul. Albuquerque conquered these areas after receiving support and guidance from Timoji and his troops.
