The holiday celebrates the establishment of Welsh settlements (Y Wladfa) in Argentine Patagonia, which began in 1865, primarily along the lower Chubut Valley coast. The area was later integrated into Argentina's Chubut National Territory (1881) and Chubut Province (1955).
