- The festivities surrounding Mardi Gras (Fašiangy) occur from January 6th until Ash Wednesday, featuring markets and carnivals.
- The country has historical sensitivities concerning national boundaries, WWII, and communism.
- When visiting private homes, remove outdoor shoes. Bringing a small gift (such as wine or chocolates) for the host is customary; avoid bringing cash. Expect cheek-kissing (one or two times) upon meeting people, rather than a handshake.
About this holiday
Epiphany (known as Three Kings' Day in Slovakia) commemorates the arrival of the Three Wise Men (Magi) who presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus. While Western Christianity recognizes it as a major feast day, Eastern Christianity observes the event on Christmas Day.
