📣 Traveler notes

Spain provides a culturally rich experience with renowned cuisine, vibrant traditions, and a relaxed lifestyle. It is a historically significant nation featuring numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • New Year's Eve (Nochevieja) tradition requires eating 12 grapes at midnight, timed with the 12 chimes (Las Campanadas) from the Puerta del Sol in Madrid.
  • Expect a fireworks display to accompany the New Year's festivities.
  • Hourly chimes (los cuartos) precede the midnight chimes (las campanadas).
  • The event is widely broadcast live on national television.
  • Be mindful of local sensitivities; avoid direct criticism, commentary on family, or political discussions. Physical contact (e.g., pats on the back) is often a sign of familiarity. While punctuality is appreciated, being slightly late is usually acceptable. When invited to a home, bring slippers, and follow local customs regarding meals.
