📣 Traveler notes

Switzerland is a high-standard-of-living, mountainous country globally known for its democracy, neutrality, and organization. Travelers should be mindful of local privacy laws, as photographing people requires explicit permission.

  • Many public holidays are regulated at the cantonal level and may vary (excluding August 1st).
  • Key recognized holidays include New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Ascension Day.
  • Note that some holiday observances may not apply in all cantons (e.g., Good Friday in Ticino and Valais).
  • Be prepared for strict adherence to rules and punctuality, especially concerning transport and community regulations.
  • Littering is fined, and appropriate waste disposal (including separating recyclables) is mandatory.
  • Always respect privacy and obtain permission before taking photos of individuals.
  • Swiss culture emphasizes punctuality, integrity, cleanliness, and respect for local rules (including quiet hours and waste disposal). While English is widely spoken, making an effort with local greetings is appreciated. Keep noise and disruptive behavior low, especially on Sundays. When making requests, use polite circumlocutions.

About this holiday

St. Nicholas of Flüe, a Swiss hermit and ascetic, is the patron saint of Switzerland. Known as Brother Klaus, he is celebrated for his moral integrity and counsel to the Diet of Stans in 1481, an event credited with helping prevent war between the Swiss cantons.
