📣 Traveler notes
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is home to a highly diverse concentration of African fauna, including endangered mountain gorillas and common chimpanzees.
- Dress modestly, especially outside tourist hubs.
- Cultural respect for local faith is expected.
- Handshakes are the standard greeting.
- Avoid criticizing local religion.
- Local displays of physical affection may indicate friendship.
- Avoid conspicuous jewelry.
- As a conservative, faith-based society, women should dress modestly (long trousers or skirts are recommended, particularly outside tourist areas). Handshakes are standard greetings; an alternative is a wrist handshake if hands are soiled. Respect for local religion is essential; avoid criticism or secular discussion of faith.
About this holiday
The holiday commemorates the martyrdom of Catholic and Anglican converts in the Kingdom of Buganda (now Uganda), executed between January 31, 1885, and January 27, 1887.
