📣 Traveler notes

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy consisting of four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each region offers distinct attractions.

  • Public holiday observance varies by UK constituent country; most establishments remain open.
  • Bank holiday periods are popular, leading to increased travel traffic and higher costs.
  • Major holidays include New Year's Day (Jan 1) and Good Friday.
  • Expect unpredictable weather, even in warmer months.
  • The UK generally offers a lively culture, especially during pleasant periods.
  • European dining norms apply: rest wrists, not elbows, on the table. It is customary to hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right. At upscale venues, spread butter only on small bread pieces. Avoid dipping bread in soup and eating loudly.

About this holiday

St. Stephen's Day, or the Feast of Saint Stephen, commemorates Saint Stephen, considered the first Christian martyr. For Western Christians, it is celebrated on December 26th, marking the second day of Christmastide. Eastern Orthodox churches using the Julian calendar celebrate it on December 27th (corresponding to January 9th on the Gregorian calendar).
