📣 Notas para viajeros

Australia is a geographically diverse country, noted for its natural wonders (beaches, deserts, the 'Outback') and major cosmopolitan cities, such as Sydney. The country is home to rich Indigenous cultures (over 65,000 years) and features a blend of natural beauty and urban development.

  • National holidays include New Year's Day (Jan 1) and Australia Day (Jan 26), which commemorates the First Fleet's landing in 1788.
  • Easter weekend (Good Friday to Easter Monday) is a major travel period, requiring advance booking for accommodations and flights.
  • The climate and culture require modest dress when visiting places of worship, although general dress standards are casual.
  • Australians are generally accustomed to international visitors, but asking for directions may lead locals to assume you are soliciting money.
  • Sensitive topics, including Indigenous Australian history or political issues, should be approached with caution and respect.
  • While most Australians are tolerant of different faiths, public proselytization or discussing religion is often met with a negative response.
  • It is respectful to always ask permission before photographing Aboriginal people or sacred sites. Be aware of local signage; some Aboriginal lands require permits, and ignoring such requests is highly disrespectful. While the Australian populace is generally tolerant, comments or actions related to Indigenous Australian history or political issues should be handled with extreme sensitivity. On ANZAC Day (April 25th), exercise care, as perceived insults towards the military are taken very seriously.

Sobre este día festivo

Proclamation Day refers to the anniversary of the proclamation of government for South Australia (celebrated December 28th, though not a public holiday). The anniversary of self-government in Western Australia (October 21, 1890) was historically known by this name.
